when i was a senior in college i babysat for a family on the upper east side. twice a week i fought an ever-losing battle with a fourth grader and a second grader who didn’t really have any reason to listen to anything i had to say. i fetched them from their fancy school, accompanied them to their various hobbies, tried to get them to do homework, read to them and sometimes succeeded in putting them to sleep. and, $20/hr felt like mountains of cash. the best and probably only lingering outcome of this arrangement was that the second grader put me on to one of the best books of all time: The Lump of Coal by Lemony Snicket.
this is a seminal text, for me. lol. it brings me so much glee and satisfaction every time i return to it. i sent this video to two friends this morning and then i realized that everyone i know and love needs to experience this book.
now for the reading:
miracles — insistence on their ubiquity and variety is an ethic, a way of life it turns out.
may you have a gleam in your eye through this season, through the ongoing heartbreak and beyond.
OMG, bring on the miracles--thank you Kendall, i loved the story and your particular telling of it. 💜
